We have been using our 1:1 Devices to research about the World's 6 major faiths. Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Sikhism. We also recognise that some people have other faiths or may choose not to follow a faith. We are planning field trips to a Buddhist Wat, a Christian Church and a Muslim Mosque.
Eric and Prim worked together. Being able to work collaborratively with a partner is a very important lifeskill.
Year Five are enjoying their regular swimming lessons in the pool with Mr. Xavi. Being able to swim confidently is so important as it will ensure you are safe in water.
We have been using the book Ruby by Maggie Glen in our PSPE and English lessons this week. Initially, we read the story together. The children retold the story in pairs to an audience from memory. There was discussion abour the emotions of difference, acceptance, tolerance and equality which are central to the story theme. Initially this book seemed like a very simple storybook but it deals with quite complex issues.
In Maths this week, Y5 continued to work on their "I can statement" or their goal for the week around the concept of place values. Groups were formed around their goal and activities were designed to help enhance their skills to master that goal. Here are some pictures to show the concentration and actions set to keep them on track.
Whole class warm-up session on ordering numbers from least to greatest.
Pin and Eliza working on rounding up to 1 million with word problems.
Athens working on multiples of 6, 7 and 9 to make connections to his goal of number patterns.
Phet, Rainer, Daewa and Kevin working on making numbers that are said up to 10,000.
Jun He, Ben, Phee, Eric and Kavier discussing powers of 10 and patterns they see.
Next week in Maths, we will be focusing on multiplication and division. Each student will decide on their own "I can statement" which will lead them into a prime focus for next week as they continue to show their knowledge and independence skills during maths sessions.
Homework from Mr. John
Reading
This is the most important part of our homework. Reading levels have been assessed and children are bringing home individal reading books. It is an expectation that children read regularly with an adult. The children will receive a record sheet for the adult to sign (and comment if they wish) when they have heard a child read. Do read regularly, and please note the children can change their book whenever they need to.
Spelling
Here is our second spelling lists. Please let your child choose the list that they wish to learn. An important part of this process is making sure that children know what the word means and using it in a sentence that they can explain to the teacherChoose the word list that best fits your learning. You have one week to learn your spellingsand use the word in a sentence. Choose only ONE list! The test will be on Friday.

Mathematics
Ms. Emmi will also be giving some Maths activities to reinforce classroom learning. Maths Y5 spent their week developing their skills in place values and number skills. Each learner chose a goal for the week which was followed by activities that would align with accomplishing their goal. What a great way to show learner agency! Next week we will continue with place value and number skills but focusing on a different goal under this tough concept.
Eliza, Liew, Daewa, Oum and Pin working on number skills with Ms. Sanook E.
Jun He and Tien displaying their independence by making their own number problems.
Kavier and Amanda displaying their knowledge with place values when verbally given a number.
Phet and Daewa showing their organisational skills by ordering numbers from least to greatest.
We used this video to help us to focus on the year ahead. We plan to be open minded and courageous learners
This week Year Five agreed a set of essential agreements. We made mini posters so they can be displayed in our classroom
Year Five were working effectively in pairs and small groups. In Mathematics, we learned about the properties of different numbers
Children made an audit of the things that they can already do. Many used their 1:1 device for this task
The children also played some games which involved estimation and comparing different facts
Just in case you missed it, here is a copy of our welcome letter.
Dear Parents,
I am delighted to be working with your children this year as they move into Year Five. I already know many of them.
About us
Mr John.E is from Wales in the UK and has worked in schools in England, Brunei Darussalam, Bangkok and Myanmar with experience in a range of management roles including Head of School. At UDIS, he is the Deputy Principal in addition to being the Year 5 classroom teacher.
Ms Sanook.E is our class Teacher Assistant. She is new to UDIS. Please do consult with her regarding questions or concerns but most times she will need to liaise with Mr. John before responding.
Ms Emmi Hines will be teaching the Year 5 Mathematics lessons this year and Year 5 will be collaborating with Year 4 and Mr Martin for English lessons.
New Students this Year
We welcome welcome four new students to our class this year. Benjamin, Rainer, Alisha and Eliza, we are happy that you will be joining our class.
Some Gentle Reminders
Do ensure that your child brings a water bottle to school every day. It is vital that children remain hydrated in order to learn successfully. Children will be able to keep their bottle in class and drink water as and when necessary. I would recommend a hat for when children are outside at break times. UDIS provides all major stationery items for children to use during the school day. However, as children get older they sometimes like to bring in their own pencil case and stationery. This is fine but please no cutting tools or items with sharp points. Please choose a functional pencil case rather than a ‘novelty’ one which is as much a toy as a pencil case. As the year progresses, I hope
children will begin to use gel ink pens.
Specialist Lessons are as follows Monday and Wednesday PE, Tuesday and Friday Swimming, and Wednesday is our Library Day.
Reading Expectations
Please read regularly with your child. This is really important! When you, or another adult, reads with your childplease sign the reading record sheet. A simple signature is fine but of course you can put a comment or ask a question if you wish
Home Learning
Homework will be set on a Monday and should be completed by the following Monday. Children will be expected to read, learn spellings, and complete an English, Maths or UOI activity. Specialists including Thai and PE may also set activities for completion. While homework expectations in Year Five will increase it will be kept to a manageable amount. Regular reading is the main priority. .
Our first Unit of Inquiry
Our first UoI is going to be really interesting. Our central idea is ‘Systems that define beliefs and values offer explanations about the world around us and what it means to be human.’ I shall share more details at the upcoming parent briefings.
Class Representative
This is intended to improve communications between parents and UDIS. We are seeking one (or maybe two parents) to take on this role.
Our Class Blog
We have a class blog system which will be updated weekly.as last year. Do take time to look at it as it will keep you up to date on what your children are learning at UDIS.
