First week of year 5
We used this video to help us to focus on the year ahead. We plan to be open minded and courageous learners
Children made an audit of the things that they can already do. Many used their 1:1 device for this task
The children also played some games which involved estimation and comparing different facts

About us
Mr John.E is from Wales in the UK and has worked in schools in England,
Brunei Darussalam, Bangkok and Myanmar with experience in a range of
management roles including Head of School. At UDIS, he is the Deputy Principal
in addition to being the Year 5 classroom teacher.

Ms Sanook.E is our class Teacher Assistant. She is new to UDIS. Please
do consult with her regarding questions or concerns but most times she will
need to liaise with Mr. John before responding.

Ms Emmi Hines will be teaching the Year 5 Mathematics lessons this year

New Students this Year
We welcome welcome four new students to our class this year. Benjamin,
Rainer, Alisha and Eliza, we are happy that you will be joining our class.

Some Gentle Reminders
Do ensure that your child brings a water bottle to school every day. It is vital
that children remain hydrated in order to learn successfully. Children will be
able to keep their bottle in class and drink water as and when necessary. I
would recommend a hat for when children are outside at break times. UDIS
provides all major stationery items for children to use during the school day.
However, as children get older they sometimes like to bring in their own pencil
case and stationery. This is fine but please no cutting tools or items with sharp
points. Please choose a functional pencil case rather than a ‘novelty’ one which
is as much a toy as a pencil case. As the year progresses, I hope

Home Learning
Homework will be set on a Monday and should be completed by the following
Monday. Children will be expected to read, learn spellings, and complete an
English, Maths or UOI activity. Specialists including Thai and PE may also set
activities for completion. While homework expectations in Year Five will
increase it will be kept to a manageable amount. Regular reading is the main

Our first Unit of Inquiry
Our first UoI is going to be really interesting. Our central idea is ‘Systems that
define beliefs and values offer explanations about the world around us
and what it means to be human.’ I shall share more details at the upcoming
parent briefings.
