Week Beginning 9th March 2020

Online learning this week
Spelling homework will not be on the blog this week. It has been put on Google Classroom. This is the platform we will use for online learning. Your child should know how to access the word list and homework activity. Please check that you can access this learning from home. If there are any problems let us know on Monday and we will help out.

Our target this week ... I can access learning from home using Google Classroom.

Our EAL students shared their Magic Box poems with us on Friday

We have created an online collection of books about Myths and Legends

Myths are usually stories with a deep, symbolic meaning. Certain myths have survived for thousands of years and they are often used to explain how the world began or how a certain culture was started.

Legends are stories that can be part-truth. The stories usually involve hero fighting monsters and being helped by magical creatures. They often involve the beliefs of the culture they come from.

Mr. Rick came and showed us how to use the Google Classroom as an online learning platform

We have been talking about being a good friend and how we choose to act influences how others react to us

We recorded our thoughts on a RUBRIC overview sheet.

Outside of our classroom, you can find a display of pencil drawings of some Myanmar lacquerware

Next weeks learning

  • Continue work on Myths and Legends including King Midas and his Magic Touch/St Colmcille and the Loch Ness Monster/Theseus and the Minotaur
  • What makes a good friend? Preferences, justifications and a summative RUBRIC
  • Using a Venn diagram to sort scientific information
  • Our Blue Planet/Core facts/Overfishing/Plastic Pollution in the sea/Greenhouse Gases Are they a real problem

Covid 19 virus
We have been regularly talking about this in class. I have tried to be very reassuring and we have very clear UDIS guidelines for helping our community stay safe. I have been impressed by the level of understanding shown by my class and how children have been following this in the press, on TV and social media. It is important that both at home and school, we give the children opportunities to share their concerns. Do give your children opportunities to share with you how they feel.

Maths learning next week
  • I can divide numbers up to 4 digits by a one-digit number using the formal written method of short division and interpret remainders appropriately for the context.
  • I can solve problems involving multiplication and division including using their knowledge of factors and multiples, squares and cubes
  • I can multiply numbers up to 4 digits by a one- or two-digit number using a formal written method, including long multiplication for two-digit numbers

Maths this week consisted of 5 stations to review and expand place value skills. These stations consisted of powers of 10 countings, rounding numbers from 10 - 100 000, an overview of place value type questions, ordering numbers and reading and writing numbers up to 1,000,000. Learners had the ability to work at their level and pair themselves up with their groups if needed.
