Week Beginning 24th February 2020

We are missing you lots. All the staff have been at school giving everywhere a deep clean as we want everyone at UDIS to be safe. We hope to open school on Monday. Parents, please check for messages on Sunday when we will share our latest update for next week. If school is closed we shall be setting online learning for the children and will send details as to how this will work.

On Thursday Ms Leeza organised a PY assembly about Mother Tongue' languages. A number of Y5 children participated.

Do take some time to look at this video about rich and poor children. What are the similarities and differences that you can see?

Thinking and writing using our mini whiteboards

Y5 Maths focused on statistics. Please watch the video to see how we did this.

Week beginning 19th February

This was a 3 day week due to our half term holiday.

Phee and Ben received special awards after PY sports day for displaying some of our PYP Learner Attributes. Phee showed great sportmanship and Ben showed a supportive attitude towards others.

In our PY assembly, children made thank you notes for the Thai staff who support us at school including, housekeepers, guards and our handyman.

We wrote recounts of a day during the half term break using time connectives, paragraphs and past tense.

Our spellings this week are quite difficult. Do look at the PowerPoint. Parents may need to help their child to understand what the words mean and talk with them about to use the words in a sentence.

Next week we will be learning

  • About ably and ibly words
  • Modal verbs such as might, will, may, should, could, would, ought, must, shall and can.
  • Preparing to talk about their energy factsheet to others.
  • Distinguishing clearly between our needs and our wants
  • Further unpicking of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of the Child.

Maths -
  • Complete, read and interpret information in tables and timetables.
  • Solve comparison, sum and difference problems using information presented in all types of graph including a line graph.

In Maths this week, Y5 started to examine timetables and what data do we gather from reading
different types of timetables. As this was a short week we decided to interpret classroom timetables.
and how they help us organise ourselves. Once learners understand how to read the timetables
they were able to pair up and write questions about their own timetable.

Some examples of the questions they wrote were

How many minutes does Y6 have for swimming and PE?
What time does Y3 have Maths on Wednesday?
How many hours and minutes are you at school in a week?
How long is lunch everyday?

These types of questions allow Y5 learners to engage and analyse information from the timetable
with a closer connection than me just asking questions to everyone.

The children learned about food groups with Ms. Emmi and the importance of a balanced diet.

With Mr John K Building Friendship was the core theme.

Mr Xavi led some sessions on mindfulness and meditation.

There was a range of activities including Football, Basketball, Dodgeball, Races, Parent Games and Challenges.

The yellow team were the winners

The red team came in 2nd place.

The green team came in 3rd place

Week beginning 3rd February 2020

Global play day

Global Play Day took place on the morning of February 5th from 8.30am to 11.10am. Children were able to bring in ONE toy or game from home on this day. This year’s theme was ‘Games Around the World’ and we provided lots of multicultural activities for your children to participate in as well as some old favourites.

We wrote recounts of Global Playday. We had to remember to use paragraphs and time connectives such as first/next/after a while/eventually/subsequently etc

In preparation for out research on energy, we had to think of the key questions we wanted to answer.

After deciding our key questions, we began researching data online and in books.

We usually have weekly spelling tests? This one was about the spelling patterns 'able' and 'ible'

Our learning next week...

  • School is closed on Monday
  • PY sports Day is on Friday morning and it's a half day
English
  • Further use of time connectives such as first/next/after a while/eventually/subsequently etc

  • There were mixed results on our ible/able spelling tests this week so we are going to retest the same vocabulary again next Thursday. The full spelling lists are in last weeks blog.
  • Becoming an expert in one form of energy and creating a factsheet.
Science
  • Further learning about lifecycles.
PSPE
  • The whole school is celebrating Thriving Week. This learning will concentrate on the themes of Building Friendships, Learning about Food and Mindfulness.
Maths
  • Identify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a reflection or translation, using the appropriate language, and know that the shape has not changed.
  • Plot specified points and complete shapes.
  • These are being continued from last week
This week in Maths, Y5 has really "stepped into" directions. Learners have had the opportunity to explore how to listen to directions, give directions and write directions using key vocabularies such as quarter turn to the left, the intersection of Elm and 1st Street, go straight to the corner of Dog Street.

This week has allowed learners to comprehend and apply their knowledge and skills of speaking, listening and directing in our Maths sessions.
