Week 6

IMPORTANT UPDATE

Dear parents,

Please accept our apologies. We have only just heard that we are unable to open on Monday, as we had hoped. You can see from the information below that we were well into  our preparations to welcome chidren back to school. Now, we await further instructions from the government.

We are all very excited about our return to school on Monday. Safety will be our highest priority. This video shows some  of the special procedures we will put into operation.

This is our classroom set up for social distancing. Each student has a clearly defined workspace and their own set of stationery.

We have created lots of space so we can maintain social distancing.

We are mindful of the need to wash our hands regularly.

We will be working with these two poems.

Next week's focus will be a review assessment given in class - this assessment will focus on

  • column approach for addition and subtraction
  • fractions
  • properties of shapes
  • measurement
  • column approach for multiplication and division
  • statistics - reading graphs and answering questions based on the graphs

Y5 learners have a good understanding of multiplication and this has helped to set a solid foundation to roll into division. Each group has worked on various types of division problems based on their ability. Some have focused on the beginning process of single-digit division such as 7 divides by 49 while others have moved to more complicated problems such as 728 divide by 13.

We are looking at being back at school next week and I'm super excited to see our learners in person. See you on Monday!

We played a review game on Kahoot to get them to recall information learnt thus year to prep for next week.  We covered such things as lines, angles, fractions and factors.

Week Beginning 20th May 2020

Here is a poem written independently by Amanda. I'm sure we share the sentiments she expresses. We are all missing school and looking forward to returning when it is safe to do so.

This is the latest episode of our BBC Look and Read series. I hope you are watching every week. Earlier episodes are on previous blogs.

Next week, learning with Mr John will focus on...

  • Preparing the Y5 contribution to the end of year event
  • Completing self reflections for our end of year reports
  • Using brackets, dashes and commas in a sentence

Next week's focus in Maths:

  • I can divide numbers up to 4 digits by a one-digit number using the formal written method of short division
    • As division can be difficult for some learners we will break this standard down into parts over the next two weeks. It will be much easier for all learners if they know their basic division facts to 12.

Since we had a short week due to our half term break Y5 had some fun review time. We were able to focus on a variety of mental maths problems during our lesson this week. During our open session, we played a review game on Kahoot that gave a chance for everyone to review skills and vocabulary learnt this year. Some found it inspiring and others found it quite a challenge.

Week Beginning 11th May

Next week is our mid-term break on Monday and Tuesday so there will not be any online learning. Our normal schedule will recommence on Wednesday.

This week we have been learning about how to perform poems. Michael Rosen is one of the worlds' most popular children's poets and an amazing storyteller. Do watch this video where he talks about how he works and performs. He is an excellent performer!

As it is a short week next week, there is no spelling list!

Do enjoy the latest episode of our BBC Look and Read story. If you missed any of the earlier ones they can be found on our previous blogs. We are now on episode 4!

              Your child's Computer

For children to be able  to fully participate and benefit from their online learning it is vital that they have a working camera with sound. Most of the time, parents are able to sort out minor problems. We have noticed a few children who have had problems over several weeks. Here are the names of some computer shops, currently open in Udon. who may be able to help.

Maths this week encouraged learners to use their communication and thinking skills to highlight and advance their multiplication skills. As learners are at different levels in their numeracy skills they were asked to complete a reflection of what they know now compared to a few weeks back when we began focusing on these core fundamental standards. Learners were also able to combine their knowledge and love of technology by completing a Flipgrid video where they could really show off what they have learned by "Being a Teacher" in their video.

Next week is a short week and so we will use that time together to do a review session on all the areas covered this term. We will come back strong during week 6 to carry on with division skills.

Week Beginning 4th May 2020

Thank you Kevin,Tien, Eliza and Phee for sending pictures of themselves working at home. Please send Ms Sanook more picture of your home learning. It would be great if we had a picture from everyone.

We were working on prefixes this week. Can you think of a suitable prefix to match the word? Remember, there may be more than one answer.

Next week's maths objectives:

  • I can multiply numbers up to 4 digits by a one- or two-digit number using a formal written method, including long multiplication for two-digit numbers.
  • I can use estimation/inverse to check answers to calculations; determine, in the context of a problem, an appropriate degree of accuracy.

Y5 worked hard on using their previously learnt skills on single digit multiplication and steadily moved up to demonstrate how to solve 2 digit, 3 digit and 4 digit multiplication calculations this week. Learners are realising how far they can go once they memorise and can quickly recall the basic 0-12 facts in both multiplication and division.

Learners are computing, interpreting and analysing number connections to help support their new learning and advance them to the next steps in numerical computations and strategies. Next week we will move to 3 and 4 digit numbers multiplied by 2 digits that will finish out this standard.

Week Beginning 15th June 2020
