Here is a link to a really good maths calculation program which I think children will enjoy. Mr.J
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button    It can help support the learning of number bonds, doubles, halves, times tables, division facts and square numbers.

Maths this week, Y5 focused on developing their own business. Developing how they can use their addition and subtraction skills in class and apply these skills to real-life situations. Learners will be able to open their store and sell their handmade items to their classmates while carrying out addition and subtraction skills.
Next week we will use these businesses developed by the learners as an independent station. Learners will also start creating their portfolios to show off what they have learnt thus far in all subject areas.
Ben making his headphones for his electronic business.

Athens creating his school supplies to support his school supply shop.

Group effort to finish their own supplies for each business they are opening.

Tien is developing his own perfume business.

Oum and Phet adding their supplies to their business and adjusting their prices for their costumers.

We looked at a copy of the Quran

We are learning about different faiths. Ms Phibz and her family follow the Muslim religion. Ms Phibz will be talking with Y4/Y5 about her faith. She has loaned us a special copy of the Quran. This is the Muslim holy text. Like all faith books, we must ensure that we treat it with respect. This is a very modern copy with a pen reader and microphone.

This week we have been learning about alliteration and we created this display in our classroom.

Here are some examples of our alliterative sentences.
  • Pin paints a peacock perfectly in the Philippines.
  • Phee the Polar bear predator politely ate the pineapple and printed a poem on the printer.
  • Sixteen snails in the safari park safely passing the scanner.
  • Every eagle destroys their effortless nest in excitement.
  • Liew the lizard licked a lime lollipop in Landmark.
  • Eric the elephant is eating enormous Easter eggs everywhere in England.
  • Angry Athens ate a lot of apples on the airplane in April.
Our Thai Department gave out awards for art and writing. Here is a picture of the winners from Year Five.

Y5 Maths has had a big impact on building their self-management and thinking skills by developing their own business. We discussed what an entrepreneur is and how they can be an entrepreneur. Next steps will be for each learner to create their own business, make items that they will sell and design their own stale before opening their "doors".
Next week we will continue this project and hope to be open for business by Wednesday. Once businesses are open, learners will role-play being a business owner or a consumer with real money to apply a practical application of addition and subtraction of money.

Homework next week will be to make a video on how an entrepreneur needs maths to help make their business successful.

Tien, Kevin, Pin and Eric using their thinking skills to start their own learning portfolios.

Pin using her independence skills to open up her school supplies shop.

Tien is very happy about his divider that helps him concentrate in class.
Eliza and Daewa focusing on building their businesses.

Our PY Assembly was all about Personal Identity

Year Five led an assembly on Personal Identity

This week, Year Five led the PY Assembly on the theme of Personal identity. The have been considering what makes them special and were encouraged to think about how their lives may change as they get older. Please find below a copy of the slides presention we used and some video excerpts from our assembly. It was great to welcome some parents to the assembly.

Here are the slides that we used during our assembly

These are some video extracts....

The children chose clothes to reflect their personal identities

The audience included parents, teachers and all students from Year One to Year Seven

Maths with Ms Emmi

Y5 Maths has continued the focus on multiplication and division. As some learners have mastered their ability to multiply 1 digit by 1 digit numbers and moving towards division with the same understanding. Others have been increasing their knowledge of more complex multiplication and division problems by completing and explaining how to work mult-step word problems that enhance their knowledge and conceptual skills.

Next week we will be working on subtraction and addition based on their abilities and their "I can" statement that we chose together.

Homework will be given on Monday and due back on Friday. If your child is working on their multiplication or division skills please practice these nightly with them.

Here are some pictures from this week's lessons together.

Phee, Athens, Kevin, Jun He, Eric and Kavier working on individual word problems with a focus of multiplication or division.

Sanook E. and Ben working together on multiplication challenges.

Pin and Amanda using the calculators to self check their work.

Rainer completing his multiplication sets.

Tien using manipulatives to better understand division.

Swimming Lessons Please note that swimming lessons are in integral part of our learning at UDIS. If there is a reason why your child cannot swim please send us a short message to say why at xavi@udoninternationalschool.com or john.e@udoninternationalschool.com  Being a strong swimmer is a lifesaver in an emergency. (Please note, we do monitor temperatures and will suspend lessons if it is too hot or cold)

PE lessons with Mr.Xavi

Year Five really enjoy PE lessons with Mr Xavi where they concentrate on developing individual and teamwork skills

Year 5 have been thinking about who we are now and who we might be in the future?

We have made booklets predicting how we think our individual identities will change during our lifetimes. We shall share these with parents later in the term

Every week Year 5 visit the library, browse the books and choose two which they may like to borrow.

We keep a careful check of who borrows which books on our library database

Year 5 have chosen two representatives to help with our Wai Kru/Teachers Day Assembly in a few weeks. Congratulations to Kevin and Liew Liew

Year 5 Assembly

On Thursday 12th September Y5 will be leading a PY assembly in our classroom. While this is not a polished perfomace, Y5 parents may wish to join our audience if you are free at 8.25 am. Children can wear their own clothes for the assembly. Our theme is PERSONAL IDENTITY.  Below is a song we will use. Please encourage your child to learn the words and actions.

Maths for Y5 this week has had a focus on multiplication and division. Some learners are working on basic multiplication facts by repetition and specific levelled games. Other learners have moved onto higher-level skills dealing with 2 and 3 digit multiplication problems and division by working in groups and small group work with Ms. Sanook E. or Ms. Emmi to help enhance their knowledge. We will continue this focus into next week before assessing their personal goal or I can statement.

Homework for next week will be personalised and will go home on Monday for additional practice at home. For those who are working on their multiplication set to 12 this should be done nightly until all 0-12 multiplication and division facts are known. Please help encourage this nightly practice.

Home Learning from Mr. John
Reading
This is the most important part of our homework. Reading levels have been assessed and children are bringing home individal reading books. It is an expectation that children read regularly with an adult. The children will receive a record sheet for the adult to sign (and comment if they wish) when they have heard a child read. Do read regularly, and please note the children can change their book whenever they need to. Please sign the reading record sheet when your child has read. Your child now has a plastic reading folder to heep their book and record sheet safe.

Spelling

Here are our third spelling lists. Please let your child choose the list that they wish to learn. An important part of this process is making sure that children know what the word means and using it in a sentence that they can explain to the teacher Children please choose the word list that best fits your learning. You have one week to learn your spellingsand use the word in a sentence. Choose only ONE list! The test will be on Friday.
