Week Beginning 25th November

Dear parents,
Today we have sent you an electrononic copy of your child's report. We will give you a paper copy at our consultation meeting next week.

In the final week of term, Y5 will be hosting a showcase where children will share some of their learning with parents and our school community. More details about this will be circulated soon.

Art is not just for the Artroom.

We have begun our Christmas preparations by learning how to draw Starburst patterns. Keep your eyes out for them around our school..

In the PY assembly, Rainer, Kevin, Ben and Eric spoke about their football ECA.

Science Experiment

In Science, we have begun looking at air and water pressure. In this experiment we made three holes in a plastic bottle and obseved what happened to the water when the holes were uncovered. To make the test fair we could only change one variable. This was the position of the hole. Everything else stayed the same.

In Maths, Y5 has been working hard to make deeper connections to measurements.

We have done this through hands-on activities, book work, paired work and individual
assessments. This week, we continued our work on measurements by reading and preparing food by following a recipe. We did this by hosting a cooking morning and had several parent volunteers to help make it a success.

Learning how to make crepes.

Teamwork and cooperation were needed to make crepes in a group.

Jun He learning how to flip a crepe.

Athen's truly enjoying his crepe!

Amanda learning how to read measurements on the glass.

Oum being able to pour the proper amount of milk using measurement amounts on the side.

Phet combining the amounts of liquid ingredients to make a tasty bubble tea.

Independence and teamwork to make chocolate chip cookies without making a huge mess.

Communication is key when working as a team.

A successful recipe turned into some yummy cookies that were eaten later in the day.

Thank you to Eric's mum, Athen's mum and friend, Daewa's dad, Pin's mum and Phee's mum for volunteering on our cooking morning. Appreciate those parents who stopped by to give a hand.

Next week, we will dive deeper into time and conversion of time by applying their knowledge of multiplication and division skills to convert word problems e.g. 7 days = how many hours or 436 minutes = how many hours and minutes?

Week Beginning 18th November

 Science Classifying Living Creatures

We have been classifying living things into mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish.

   Thunking

Thunking involves thinking about some really big questions and trying to answer them.  This week our Thunk question was... if I borrow a million baht am I a millionaire?

                                           Explorer Presentation
Year 5 have each chosen a particular explorer to research. Some of their choices are familiar, others not. When the presentationsa re complete we shall be inviting parents to come to an end of unit showcase.

                                                      Being the teacher!

This week Year Five have been learning about dictation where they had to listen and write at the same time. They then got to correct their own work just like being a teacher!

Maths this week allowed us to continue our work with measurements. We worked on converting from one measurement to another for example 2kg=2000g. All learners had the opportunities to discover how long objects were in the classroom using a variety of measuring tools. We also spend time working on vocabulary and abbreviations that are commonly known within the area of measurement.

Next week, we will continue with measurements by looking at recipes and having our big cooking morning on Tuesday. The rest of the week we inquire into time. Looking at timetables and converting units of time.
Kavier measuring the length pencil sharpener in cm.

Liew, Oum and Athens measuring the length of the window using a meter stick.

Daewa and Liew measuring the height of Amanda in cm.

Eric, Phee and Kavier using a meter stick to measure longer lengths such as the door.

Comparing different measuring tools - what tools do you use for measuring length, liquid, temperature?

Thursday, 14 November 2019

On Monday we celebrated Loy Kratong at UDIS. Many students and staff wore traditional Thai costume for the event.

Here we are just after the Loy Kratong Assembly had ended

All children participated in Kratong making

As far as possible, we tried to use eco friendly materials

Completed kratongs ready to float

Science

We have been carrying out an experiment this week and using thermometers to measure water temperatures. We are also learning about how to make a scientific test fair by changing only one variable at a time.

We needed someone to check the water level, take the temperature, keep note of the time and record the results

We had to ensure we took accurate measurements

It was important for each group to work in exactly the same way.

This activity involved working together as a team.

We will shortly be starting our preparations for our Christmas show. It is likely that Year 5 will be present the traditional song entitled The 12 Days of Christmas. We have included a You Tube video so your child can begin to practise, especially if the song is unfamiliar to them.

I shall confirm soon, but costumes are likely to be anything Christmassy. I am hoping parents will be able to find things already at home, or buy items locally without great expense.

Maths

In Mathematics, the children are learning about measurement. Here the bookcase is being measured with a tape measure.

These children are measuring the whiteboard with a metre stick

Week Beginning 15th June 2020

We have finally made it to the end of the term. It has been quite challenging, especially with the Covid 19 closure but the children ...
