We have been using Big Books in our learning which have been specifically written for older children. They promote group interaction and are being used as an introduction to our learning about the features of a non-fiction text.
Our books are Energy on Earth, Investigating Islands, Energy, The Cost of Living and Incredible Insects.
We have been thinking about the vocabulary used to describe the various stages of the human life cycle.
On Thursday, UDIS celebrated Chinese New Year. Many of us were able to wear Chinese themed clothes. All PY classes participated. The children made some delicious Chinese delicacies. A special thank you to all the Mums who came in to help with this activity.
English
- We will be looking at how we use time connectives in our writing e,g, firstly, then, presently, later, afterwards etc.
- In spelling, the children will find out about words containing the letter string 'ough'
- We be continuing to look at the main features of a non-fiction text.
Science
- The children will continue to learn about electrical circuits and human and animal lifecycles.
- We will be researching the time it takes to hatch eggs or how long it takes for baby mammals to develop before being born.
UOI
- The children will choose one form of energy and will complete research to become an expert on the one they choose.
- They will use the data collected in order to plan how they will create an information factsheet.
Spelling
This week our approach is a little different. The children will all learn the same set of words and put them into sentences. Try to make the sentences as complex as possible. The 'ough' words are tough (difficult) and you may have to help your child understand the meaning.

Maths
- Add and subtract numbers mentally with increasingly large numbers and decimals to two decimal places.
- Read, write, order and compare numbers with up to 3 decimal places.
- Add and subtract whole numbers with more than 4 digits and decimals with two decimal places, including using formal written methods (columnar addition and subtraction)
- Use rounding to check answers to calculations and determine, in the context of a problem, levels of accuracy.
This week in Maths, learners have explored how to calculate perimeter and area of rectilinear shapes by finding out how and when you would need these types of measurements in our daily lives. Learners also were given opportunities to produce their own rectilinear shapes and find their perimeter and area of shapes drawn. By applying this type of knowledge it shows that some learners have secured their understanding of these concepts. While other learners spend time developing simpler pre-made problems to guide their understanding.
