Week Beginning 13th January

Year Five have been reading playscripts aloud and seeing how the text informs actors how to perform.

This week, Year Five have begun learning about playscripts and are working towards being able to identify the main features found in playscripts and are starting to write some of their own. They began with a dialogue between two characters and will move on to more complex plots next week.

Here is a short video of a playscript reading.

We have also begun to write playscripts of our own.

Science
In our science, the children have been learning how to make basic electrical circuits with switches, buzzers and motors.

An Overview
This video is very helpful for both parents and children. For parents, it provides a summary of the main areas of learning in our current Unit of Inquiry on Energy. For students, it can help them reflect on their learning so far and how our choices of energy can have positive and negative effects on our environment.

PY Assembly
On Thursday Year Five sang a song about Teamwork in the Primary Years Assembly. They choreographed it themselves.

On Thursday next week, we shall be celebrating The Year of the Rat as Chinese New Year approaches. Children are requested to wear Chinese clothes or red and gold. If you are unable to find these, house shirts will be fine. Children may wish to bring school uniform to change into if they wish.

Our learning next week...
  • We will continue working on playscripts with an emphasis on the children creating their own.
  • Children should be able to explain the main features of a playscript
  • In Science, children will continue making electrical circuits of increasing complexity. We shall also be classifying the stages of life from birth to death and researching the gestation periods of a variety of creatures.
  • We will continue finding out about a range of energy sources and their effect on our environment. The children will choose one energy source that interests them. They will then move on to become 'an expert' on their choice next week.

Maths learning next week will be:
  • Measure/calculate the perimeter of composite rectilinear shapes.
  • Calculate and compare the area of a rectangle, use standard units square centimetres (cm2) and square metres (m2) and estimate the area of irregular shapes.

Homework will be an activity sheet based on perimeter. This will go home on Monday and returned by Thursday.

This week, Y5 learners focused in on applying their knowledge about angles and measurement to gain a deeper understanding of how we find angles and where we use angles in real life. Learners were able to investigate around of school to find several types of angles we have been learning about.
Also, we have had the opportunity to complete some book work to help consolidate our learning in a more formal setting as well as discussions, group work and real-life application of these concepts.
